Video games are the best teacher – Thephatgamer

Video games saved me!!

Haters gonna hate but gamers gonna game!! Gamers are on constant backlash for being idiotic, uninspiring and anti-social. While it is far from the truth, on the contrary games have served almost every kid and adult alike to face adversities in life. There are valuable life skills learnt from games.

From being a Mentor, a teacher or a guide, games have always being a source of motivation for me. When I failed my exam, games gave me inspiration to retake it, when I felt let down by people, I found uplifted by games. On countless occasions, I have turned to gaming as an escape and to which a game responded as a guide rather than an escape. It may be subjective but I have come across various games whereI found some form learning that made me tougher.

Conventional wisdom envisions Movies, Music, and Books as a source of inspiration; however, I differ from this opinion. I have had habits that were destructive that I have lessened over the years. Living on extreme, led me to flip between passive aggressive to hyper-assertive behavior. Consequently, I was subservient to my ego that led me to burn bridges beyond repair.

As a result, I embraced robotic lifestyle just going to through the motion each day until I was stimulated by a game to feel alive again. Every now and then there is a moment in every video game that we deeply cherish which serves as a limitless supply of inspiration at the darkest moments in our life. Valuable life skills learnt from games helped achieve things that I would not otherwise have achieved. Here is a list of games that helped gain valuable life skills:

1) Relationship is to be cherished and Time is Money – Super Mario Bros

Mario on NES

I originally played super Mario on Nintendo Entertainment System back in 1998 or 2000. A franchise that became worth 1 billion has deeply impacted my linear thinking. Throughout the game, Mario is fighting eagles, turtles, and dragons to save his princess. As Mario journeys through various levels, there is a gradual increase in difficulty of the situation.

Enemies get stronger, faster and smarter, however, our young man is not discouraged and persistently pushes through adversities. In real life, I had experienced a heart break because of my lack of participation to hold the relationship together. As a consequence, the relationship was at the edge of destruction and I remember enemies getting smarter to bring us apart.

Super Mario Bros – A Billion Dollar Franchise

Instead of being let down by the situation, I coped up by fighting through the chaos, journeying through the maze of misunderstanding and finally I defeated ‘Bowser’. I hit the switch at the right time that dropped the monster into the pits of fire.

Trapped behind the monster, my princess whom I rescued and reclaimed my love. It may be corny but it’s true, Mario’s bravery translated into an inspiration for me to repair a seriously strained relationship.  Additionally one of the other valuable life skills learnt from games, especially Mario was that Time is money, and the more I leverage it, the more points it adds to my score card. As a result, I learnt the value of my relationships and most importantly my time. Thanks to Mario and Luigi!!

2) Find your true calling and pursue it endlessly – Uncharted 4

There various skills that are to be learnt from Naughty dog’s hottest franchise Uncharted 4. Initially, I did not believe the hype, however the rising trend, and insane hysteria that followed the period after the launch of the teaser, I gave in to the hype. Moreover, timely launch of Ps4 game, Uncharted: Nathan Drake Collection compelled me to understand the story preceding the final chapter.

It is only after you are lost, that you will find yourself!!

On playing Nathan Drake’s collection, I was intrigued by the passion and courage that Nathan Drake shows while outrageously pursuing his passion. I have witnessed many people who are living their life in an invisible prison cell. Plagued by debt and consumerism, people go to work, spend on mindless consumption and further add to their piling debt.

Journey into the abyss

As a result, general dissatisfaction and anxiety become rampant. People are shackled to their dead end jobs to pay off their debt and finance their swanky lifestyle. Nathan Drake pursues what his heart desires despite nagging remarks by naysayers or his concerned wife: Elena.

His search for the truth which affected his childhood, his family leads to redemption which is beautifully concluded in the series. All things considered, Nathan Drake has also tickled my passion for travel and writing, which otherwise would not have happened. One of the most valuable life skills learnt from games.

3) Great things in life come to those who hustle – Grand theft auto 5

3 hustlers of GTA

One of the franchises that changed gaming forever belongs to highly revered Rockstar game Grand theft auto 5. I distinctly remember when I started playing GTA from a birds eye view. It’s evolution into 3rd person view which defined a whole genre of open world gaming. GTA belongs to the category of those few studios that research, develop, tweak and fine tweak before the actual release of the game.

GTA 5 – King of the open world

Franklin is low-lifer in GTA 5 who dreams of grandiose and hustle to move from rags to riches. Frustrated by the imbecilic life of the ghetto, under these circumstances his only option is to smartly hustle to make it big.

Among other characters such as Michael, Trevor etc, Franklin is focused on his grind and strategically chooses activities that build his connections and reputation in the big league. His mastery over the craft, aversion to mediocrity and burning desire to self-create a future led him to the float around some of the top dogs of the criminal world.

Hustler’s ambition

Although he chilled with Lamar but he detested the lifestyle that his locality offered. He got over his past, started hustling and creating an image for himself, he did the grind but was smart enough to pick those that amplified his hustle. Franklin’s persona is highly sought after and one of the most influential characters in GTA 5.

4) Sims City – Life is an art of balancing the positive and negatives

Balance is the key!!

Electronic Art created a life simulator that depicted real life. I remember playing this game on PC in the year 2004. Initially, the game did not click with me. I uninstalled the game, however since I completed the library of games I had, I re-installed Sims. My determination grew to learn and complete Sims, actually realised that it is a strategic life-simulation game (Genre that I was introduced to for the first time). As the game turns out, its purpose is to keep the simoleans achieve their goals in life. As the gameplay became clearer to me, I was hooked and engaged.

SIMS university

One of valuable life skills learnt from video games, i.e Sims 2 is to lead a balanced life. I had psychological symptoms of OCD and was Manic Depressive. An idea of perfection or utopia haunted me, I played Sims 2 to realise that it doesn’t exist. Juggling through everyday struggle and still enjoying the present kept the simolean happy and content which was displayed in their mood meter. I attracted a lot of balance and harmony in life by eliminating the need to live on extreme and dedicating myself to a balanced and stoic approach. As faith would have it, this lesson is one of key learning that schools, colleges and universities fail to impart. Academic knowledge as they say to make you a living, whereas life-skills makes you a fortune.

Those are some of the valuable life skills learnt from video games. Hope you employ these learning in your everyday lives and watch yourself go global like our Franklin. Till then let me know in the comments, what skills have games taught you?
